This morning we depart for Lynchburg, VA, where we'll spend three nights at The Virginian Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton. A centerpiece of downtown Lynchburg since 1913, this magnificent hotel has been thoughtfully restored to its historic grandeur and refreshed with modern amenities. Walk to restaurants and boutiques and stroll along the James River. This evening we'll take a private docent lead tour of Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, his cherished hideaway, decorated for the holidays. Step into Christmas past and experience the villa by candlelight while our guide shares true stories gathered from Jefferson’s letters and diaries, about the ways the Jefferson family and their enslaved workers spent the holidays. Find out what foods they may have enjoyed at their holiday meals and how they were prepared in the restored Jefferson-era kitchen. Dinner this evening is at locally owned and operated Charley's Restaurant. Founded in 1980 by former Major League Baseball player Charley Sands, Charley’s has grown into one of Lynchburg’s favorite restaurants.D
After breakfast we'll explore the rich history of central Virginia at the Lynchburg Museum at the Old Court House. The Museum shares stories about the people and fascinating events that shaped the region. Exhibits include antique toys, military items from all wars, fine art, furniture and silver made in Lynchburg, costumes, historic photographs, sports and music memorabilia, three media programs, and much more. We'll have lunch at Depot Grill, which was converted from Lynchburg's own freight train station. The railroad themed restaurant is on the riverfront downtown, and its antique bar and 'box car' kitchen set the stage. This afternoon we'll tour Point of Honor Mansion, learning insights into the adventure and struggle of daily chores at this once 750-acre plantation. A fascinating exhibit explores medicine as practiced by the original owner and builder of the home, Dr. George Cabell, whose patients included American patriot Patrick Henry. Pamphlets will be provided to choose where you will have dinner on your own downtown this evening. Michelin star chefs and Food Network veterans have set up shop on cozy Downtown streets and quiet nooks.B, L
Today, following breakfast, we'll take a step-on guided historic driving tour. We'll arrive at the Lynchburg Community Market for free time and lunch on your own. This market is purportedly the third oldest continuously running farmer’s market in the country. Duck in to one of the many unique shops that feature local artisans where you’ll find special reminders of your trip to the Hill City. We'll have time to rest and refresh at the hotel this afternoon before dinner this evening. Shoemakers, located in the Craddock Terry Hotel, treats guests to big city dining in the heart of Downtown Lynchburg. Offering fine cuisine in an upscale industrial setting, its shoe themed rooms and décor reflect Lynchburg’s past as one of the nation’s leading shoe manufacturing cities during the late 19th to mid-20th centuries. After dinner we'll bring in the new year at a special New Year's Eve celebration!B, D
A leisurely morning and breakfast will start our day. We will then check-out of our accommodations and head for home. With stops for lunch and rest en route, arrival home is scheduled for early evening.B
