Day 1
Today we tour Saratoga Springs, NY including a walking food tour, Saratoga Spa State Park, Saratoga National Battlefield, historic mansions, and the Saratoga Race Course. Known for its horses, mineral springs, and historical affiliations, no wonder the town slogan is Health, History, and Horses. Lodging this evening is at the Gideon Putnam Hotel, an elegant historic hotel inside Saratoga Spa State Park. It is close to downtown Saratoga Springs where you can enjoy the restaurants, shopping, and attractions that Main Street has to offer. You may even wish to book a spa treatment at the historic Roosevelt Baths!
Day 2
Arrive in the Adirondack Mountains where we will enjoy a lunch cruise on Raquette Lake. Boasting 99 miles of shoreline bordered with pines and mountains, this is the largest natural lake in the Adirondacks. Following the lunch cruise, we will depart for a tour of Great Camp Sagamore, a National Historic Landmark from America's Gilded Age. Once a private getaway for the wealthy and famous, this 27-building "playground" is now open to the public. Our lodging for the next two nights is The Mirror Lake Inn, a stunning Adirondack hotel located in Lake Placid, along the shoreline of Mirror Lake. You will have free time to enjoy the inn's many amenities before an included dinner.
Day 3
This morning we will meet our local guide for a full day of touring. We will begin with a drive up to the top of Whiteface Mountain along the historic Veterans' Memorial Highway. We'll disembark for a short walk to the amazing views/photo op. At 4,867 feet, this is New York's fifth-highest peak. Next, we'll tour the Olympic Center where the US men's hockey team toppled the Soviet Union on their way to winning gold in the 1980 Winter Olympics and where 16-year-old figure skater, Sonja Henie, charmed the world by winning gold in the 1932 Winter Olympics. You'll have time for lunch on Main Street before heading to the Olympic Ski Jump where you'll stand alongside the ramp that ski jumpers launch themselves from before flying over the length of a football field. You can explore the site from a birds-eye view on Skyride - an 8-person, glass-enclosed, pulse gondola that takes you to the sky deck of the 128-meter ski jump which offers 360-degree panoramic views of Lake Placid. A tour of the John Brown Farm State Historic Site will end our touring for today. This is the home of the famed abolitionist, John Brown, providing a glimpse of life in the 19th century and information about Brown's mission to abolish the practice of slavery. Tonight, you'll have free time for dinner on your own at one of the many dining options on Main Street.
Day 4
We'll travel to Clayton, NY located on the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands. Here, we'll enjoy a walking tour of this quaint seaway village with a colorful history. After lunch on your own, we'll embark on a narrated tour circling Sunken Rock Lighthouse with a stop at Rock Island, home of Rock Island Lighthouse. We'll check-in to our lodging for the next two evenings, The Harbor Hotel. A seaway dinner is included at the hotel.
Day 5
A day of guided touring begins with the Two Nation Boat Tour. This intimate tour travels over 25 unique miles along the St. Lawrence River, offering many photo ops along the way. We'll pass freighters and ocean-going vessels, "Millionaires Row", private islands, and premier sights in the 1000 Islands. A picnic lunch is included. This afternoon we'll do a self-guided tour of Boldt Castle (the jewel of the Thousand Islands) located on Heart Island. We'll end our day of touring at the Antique Boat Museum, a premier freshwater boating museum that holds over 320 unique boats and thousands of boat-related artifacts and archives.
Day 6
Enroute home we will visit Tibbett's Lighthouse and Museum. Standing guard at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario, this lighthouse has stood vigil since 1827. It features the only original, working Fresnel lens in Lake Ontario. After enjoying the scenery, we'll head home for our scheduled arrival time of early evening.
