Maryland's Eastern Shore & Chesapeake Bay Region

Maryland's Eastern Shore & Chesapeake Bay Region

"Maryland is for crabs" or at least that's the tongue-in-cheek slogan a witty T-shirt manufacturer made popular in the 1970s as a parody of the motto coined by the state's southern neighbor, Virginia. Literally speaking, the state IS for crabs... the blue crab is the state crustacean! Explore this genuine water wonderland as we travel to Cecil & Harford Counties, two of Maryland’s 16 counties that border the tidal shoreline. Exhibits on this tour recall the importance of water in MD’s history.

Day 1

Upon arrival in Maryland, we will meet our guide who will be with us for the next three days and will be showing us the highlights of the region. Our first stop is North East, MD, a charming small town at the top of the Chesapeake Bay. We will visit the Upper Bay Museum, offering one of the largest collections of hunting and fishing memorabilia in this area, and visit St. Mary Anne's Historic Church. After an included lunch, we will depart for a stroll down Main Street where you will find various shops full of artisanal goods and antiques. We will then check-in to our accommodations for the next two evenings. Dinner this evening will be a real Chesapeake Bay crab feast including crab soup, steamed crabs, fried chicken, corn on the cob, and all the "fixins".

Day 2

After breakfast we will depart for Chesapeake City, which came into existence because of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, which links Delaware & Chesapeake bays across the Delmarva Peninsula. The canal allows oceangoing vessels serving Baltimore and other northern ports to avoid the 296 mile trip around the peninsula. We will take a walking tour in the historic district followed by a self-guided tour of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal Museum. We will then enjoy a pontoon boat cruise on the C&D Canal followed by an included lunch. This afternoon we will visit Fairwinds Equestrian Farm where we can visit the barns, see a bee keeper demonstration and even enjoy a carriage ride. Dinner is included at a local restaurant.

Day 3

Following breakfast we will travel to Port Deposit, located on the east bank of the Susquehanna River near its discharge into the Chesapeake Bay. This 19th-century residential town boasts many fine examples of Victorian and granite architecture, which we will see on our tour of the historic district. We will then visit the Conowingo Dam, a large hydroelectric dam in the lower Susquehanna River. The medium-height, masonry gravity dam is one of the largest non-federal hydroelectric dams in the United States. Bring your binoculars and cameras, as this is a special treat for bird lovers. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will visit Dove Valley Winery for a wine and cheese tasting. Try not to be too "crabby", as we sadly depart for home this afternoon! Arrival home is scheduled for early evening.
