Coastal Virginia's Oyster Trail 2020

Coastal Virginia's Oyster Trail 2020

One of the best ways to experience Virginia is through food. Virginia is, after all, the Birthplace of American Cuisine and the Oyster Capital of the East Coast. Experience Virginia with the flavors of thoughtfully selected, carefully sourced local ingredients. Taste the history of Virginia including sustainable farmed Chesapeake Bay oysters and crab. The food experience on this tour is rooted in more than just good taste: it provides the story of the land you're standing on.

Day 1

Today we travel south to Virginia Beach, Virginia, the location of our lodging for the next three evenings. En route, we stop to explore the Barrier Islands Center Museum, housed in a 19th century schoolhouse which chronicles life on the Shore. This visit will be followed by a wine tasting experience at Chatham Vineyards, a family-owned and operated winery. A late afternoon check-in to the Best Western Oceanfront on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk will be followed by dinner on your own at the Lucky Oyster, a fun, casual restaurant offering a variety of oysters, other seafood and American specialties.

Day 2

After breakfast at the hotel, we will be met by our guide for a "Welcome to
Virginia Beach Riding Tour" as you learn about the history of Virginia's largest city and get the pulse on current day in Virginia Beach. We will visit the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Brock Center, one of the world's greenest buildings, to learn about their work to restore the health of the bay, its rivers and streams. A stop will be made at the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse, a National Historic Landmark that has guarded the mouth of the bay since 1792 (You may climb the lighthouse on your own for a small fee). We will enjoy a boxed lunch from a local specialty shop followed by a visit to the Chesapeake Bay Center, a nature based eco-tourism information center that is part of First Landing
State Park. Lastly, we will tour Ferry Plantation, a house with a unique history as a former ferry stop along the Lynnhaven River. Dinner tonight will be included at Rockafeller's which features fresh, local seafood and American favorites in a beautiful setting on Rudee Inlet. You will begin your meal with the house specialty, Oysters Rockafeller.

Day 3

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before departing with our guide for a day exploring Virginia Beach. We start our adventure at the Virginia Aquarium, where you will experience a unique journey through Virginia's marine environment, featuring 800,000 gallons of aquariums and more than 300 hands-on exhibits. We then embark on a Dolphin Watching Boat cruise, where you will witness close-up observations of our marine environment and its inhabitants as they glide through the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Lunch will be on your own at Beach Bully BBQ in the VIBE district, an art-focused neighborhood. To conclude our day of touring, we will visit the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum, a former lifesaving station from 1903, which houses exhibits dedicated to preserving our maritime heritage and coastal history. This evening, you'll taste oysters and enjoy a delicious included meal at Bubba's Seafood Restaurant, a local,
casual hangout with a rustic vibe, on the water.

Day 4

Following breakfast, we will check out and head across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to visit Cherrystone Aqua Farms. Here we will explore a piece of Chesapeake Bay heritage and take a hands-on tour. View oysters and clams in their natural water habitat as you learn how they are cultivated, harvested and the steps local farmers are taking to protect Virginia's shellfish population. Next, we will head up the coast and relax over a seafood lunch, on your own, at the waterfront Island House restaurant and enjoy beautiful views of the marsh and barrier islands. We then depart for home with fond memories of our time spent exploring Coastal Virginia's Oyster Trail. Arrival home is scheduled for later this evening.
