Brewery, Cars & Coal Mine

Day 1

Come tour the site of America’s Oldest Brewery. Discover the hand-dug fermentation caves that were used for storage before refrigeration. Wander through time and enjoy a taste of living history in a building that has produced fine beers through times of peace, prosperity, upheaval, and world war. Completely closed shoes are REQUIRED to go on tour, sneakers are recommended. Following the tour you will have free time in the gift shop and to use the restrooms before an included lunch buffet at a local restaurant in Pottsville.

Pioneer Tunnel is a horizontal drift mine with a level tunnel that runs 1800 feet straight into the side of the Mahanoy Mountain. You make the trip in comfort, riding in open mine cars pulled by a battery-operated mine motor. The temperature inside the mine averages 52 degrees and the tour lasts about 35 minutes, so a sweater or jacket is recommended. Deep inside the mine, you will alight from your car and follow your miner-guide as you are given an explanation of how coal is mined. You will then travel back through time on an old-time narrow gauge steam locomotive, the Henry Clay. Built in the 1920s, The Henry Clay takes you on a scenic three-quarter mile ride around the side of Mahanoy Mountain to show you another kind of mining called strip mining. During the ride, you'll see the Mammoth Stripping, an area where an unusually thick seam of anthracite known as the Mammoth Vein outcrops to the surface of the earth.

Our last stop will be Jerry's Classic Cars & Collectibles Museum where you can relive the days of the past, when cars were classically designed, rock 'n roll ruled everyone's radio, and the nights were about watching movies at the drive-in theater or sipping a milkshake at a local soda shop.
