There are only a few great rail excursions left in the world and this is certainly one of them…The Polar Bear Express departs Cochrane for an incredible 186 mile journey to the Arctic Tidewater at Moosonee. Your trip will take you to a sparsely populated land of forests, tranquil lakes and muskeg. As you tour Moosonee, you will begin to understand the realities of this frontier community.

Saturday, August 4

Stops will be made for rest and lunch before arriving at our lodging for the evening in Niagara Falls, New York.  This evening we will have dinner on your own.

Sunday, August 5

This morning we begin traveling northward to the Georgian Bay at Tobermory where we will board the Chi-Cheemaun (Big Canoe) for a two hour cruise to South Beymouth.  Lunch will be included in Owen Sound.  Touring across Manitoulin Island, the world’s largest island completely surrounded by fresh water (Lake Huron), will lead us to our lodging for the evening in Sudbury.B,L 

Monday, August 6

We will visit Sudbury’s Dynamic Earth, featuring mines, mills and copper refineries and Science North, one of the best “hands on” museums devoted to science and technology in Canada.  Departing Sudbury by early afternoon we will travel through the Canadian wilderness to Cochrane, Ontario and our lodging for this evening.  Cochrane is the southern shipping port for all freight and passengers headed for the Arctic Circle.  CB 

Tuesday, August 7

Rise early and “All Aboard” the Polar Bear Express for our trek into James and Hudson Bay Territories.  There are no roads to this northern region, only rail and plane can access Moosonee.  Our lodging in Moose Factory will be at the Cree Village Ecolodge.  CB, L

            Note: Packing a smaller overnight bag for this night will allow you to leave your larger suitcase on the motorcoach. 

Wednesday, August 8

Today after continental breakfast, we will take a guided boat tour via freighter canoe from the mouth of the Moose River to the salt waters of the James Bay. There we will beach on the Moose River Migratory Bird Sanctuary where you will be given the chance to photograph the wildlife and tidal marine fauna. We will depart on the late afternoon Polar Bear Express back to Cochrane.CB, D

Thursday, August 9

After breakfast we will depart for the Polar Bear Habitat and Heritage Village.  Here, we’ll see Polar Bears in their natural habitat.  Our lodging this evening will be in North Bay.  CB

Friday, August 10

Relax in air-conditioned comfort as we tour along the Ontario countryside to our next overnight in lovely Toronto.  Upon arrival we will have a guided city tour.  After dinner on our own, we will enjoy a harbor cruise. CB

Saturday, August 11

This morning we will travel to the observation deck of the giant CN Tower, considered to be the tallest freestanding structure in the world.  Our lodging this evening is in Mount Morris, New York.  CB 

Sunday, August 12

This morning we will visit the Corning Glass Center in the heart of the lovely Finger Lakes.  Arrival home is scheduled for late afternoon.   CB  

Note:  This tour includes an area of Ontario that is relatively undeveloped.  While the motels we use are clean and safe, they may not provide all the amenities that would be expected at our usual first class properties.  In addition, “Polar Bear Express” is the name of the train providing service between Cochrane and Moosonee.

  

Please Note:  A passport is required for ALL travel between the U.S. and Canada.

  • If you are bringing children on the tour other than your own, customs is requiring that you have a registered letter of approval from their parents. 
  • To fully participate in this tour may require extended periods of walking. There may be steps, inclines, uneven surfaces or extended periods of standing. Participants with physical limitations should take this into account.
