Today we travel to the beautiful Laurel Highlands and Ligonier, PA, our home for the next two nights. Upon arrival in Ligonier, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Compass Inn Museum. At the Ramada Ligonier we will be greeted with a red carpet roll-out and welcome reception upon arrival. For tonight’s dinner, we will take a Sentimental Jukebox Journey; a musical revue of the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. D
Saturday, September 24
We will start the day with a full breakfast buffet before traveling to the Somerset Historical Center where the story of rural Pennsylvania life, agriculture and progress is portrayed. Tour includes 1773 log cabin, cider press demonstration and maple sugar camp. We will enjoy a Spotza Party, where we will assist in making our own homemade spun maple sugar treat. Then we will travel to the Quecreek Mine Rescue Site where nine trapped miners were miraculously rescued after the Quecreek mining accident in July 2002. Here we will visit the Quecreek Memorial where the Arnold family will tell this incredible story that occurred on their farm. Afterwards, enjoy lunch on your own at Our Coal Miner’s Café before making a brief visit to the National Park Service site, Flight 93 Memorial. We can pay our respects and remember the impact on so many lives on that fateful day, 10 years ago, followed by a special visit to the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel. It embraces all of the passengers and pays special tributes in honor of the heroes/heroines aboard Flight 93. Tonight, it’s off to the Rockwood Mill Shoppes and Opera House where you’ll have time to visit the quaint shops before dinner and a show. B, D
Sunday, September 25
After a full breakfast buffet, we’ll have a guided tour of Fort Ligonier. Step back in time to 18th century frontier life. Enjoy the fabulous exhibit, The World Ablaze, along with young George Washington’s original memoirs. The tour of this 8 acre site includes cannons, wagons, and 10 furnished buildings. After free time for shopping and lunch on your own in historic Ligonier, we’ll go to the Johnstown Flood Museum where a tour and award-winning documentary film demonstrate the events of this 1889 catastrophic flood, one of the worst in American history. Then we’ll ride on the Johnstown Incline Plane. This was constructed after the first flood of 1889 as a “lifesaver”, saving people during the floods of 1936 & 1977. We’ll depart for home, with an evening arrival. B, L
