Our drive today brings us to the Thomas Dock in Crisfield, MD, where we board the ship that takes us onto beautiful Smith Island. This is Maryland's only inhabited off-shore Island in the Chesapeake Bay, accessible exclusively by boat. Comprised of three separate villages, it is populated by 380 friendly, hardy people, all direct descendants of the original settlers from England and Cornwall in 1657. With the exception of a scant few, all its citizens derive their livelihood from the unpredictable waters of the Chesapeake. There are many interesting things to see on Smith Island...a way of life truly unique in toda's world.
